Enugu up to date in payment of salaries – NLC

The Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has debunked newspaper report that Lagos State Government is the only state in the country that is “healthy” in the payment of workers’ salaries, saying that “Enugu State Government does not owe any salary to date”.

In a statement by its State Chairman and Ag. Secretary, Comrade Virginus Nwobodo and Comrade Edema Edward Olorunwa, respectively, the congress took exception to the said report, regretting that the author did not carry out “a thorough and holistic research before issuing the statement”.

The NLC stressed that “apart from making sure that salaries are paid not later than 25th day of every month”, Enugu State Government also ensured that the 13th month salary was paid to all the workers last year as Christmas bonus.

The congress added: “It is also imperative to inform the public that the backlog of salaries owed local government staff by successive governments in Enugu State had been cleared by Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on assumption of office”.

It maintained that Enugu State Government does not take the issues of workers’ salaries “lightly at all”, saying: “We will be available to prove our case beyond any reasonable doubt should the need arise”.

According to the congress, “Enugu State is quite healthy, as Gburugburu is working and this is possible because Enugu State is in the hands of God”.

A newspaper report (Sunday Vanguard of February 25, 2018) titled “Labour Laments: 35 States Can’t Pay Salaries”, had alleged that Lagos State Government is the only healthy state that can pay workers’ salaries in the country.
