Enugu State Government shuts down three hospitals over poor standards

Enugu State Government has shutdown  three private hospitals over poor standard in operation and medical facilities.

The State Governor,  Sullivan Chime had earlier in the year set up a committee to monitor health facilities in all private hospitals in the state.

The Task Force has also summoned owners of the affected  hospitals to explain why they failed to meet up with the state’s standard

The state Commissioner of Health, Dr Fidelia Ugwu told newsmen, shortly after the monitoring exercise by members of the committee at the weekend that the Task Force was set up with a mandate to ensure that private hospitals meet up with the standard set  by the state Ministry of Health.

The Commissioner who spoke through the Director of Medical Services, State Ministry of Health, Enugu, Dr Ndubuisi Ejeh, said the Task Force would not rest on it oars in monitoring of health institutions in order to effectively regulate their practice. He said: “We just moved around and visited about seven health facilities, the exercise is a continuous one, the objective of this exercise is to ensure that our health facilities give the required services and also to ensure that when people go to hospitals they will get satisfactory services.”

He added that they observed that in some hospitals, the wards were not well equipped, adding that some theaters don’t have necessary facilities.

Ejeh said that the committee discovered that some of the hospitals have insufficient and unqualified staff while others were closed down because of some  inadequacies noticed.

“Owners of some  hospitals we did not close down were asked to come to the state Ministry of Health and get proper brief on what they should do,” he added.
