Enugu Rangers have ended a 32-year wait for a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title.
The Flying Antelopes defeated Ikorodu United 2-1 in Lagos on Sunday, to all but secure the league crown, after their title rivals faltered in their games.
Rivers United drew 0-0 with Abia Warriors in Port Harcourt, which means they are three points adrift of Rangers with one fixture left. The only way Rivers United can topple Rangers, is if they win their last game away to Akwa United 5-0 and the Coal City team loses their home match to El Kanemi Warriors.
It is indeed a remarkable story for Rangers, who narrowly escaped relegation last season.
Determined to end their long wait for a title, Imama Amakapabo’s men started the 2015/2016 campaign like a train on fire.
The inconsistent form of deposed champions Enyimba, Wikki Tourists and Rivers United, also ensured that one of the traditional Nigerian clubs return to the apex of domestic football again.
