Enugu LG polls: ENSIEC commends PDP for peaceful primaries

The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) on Saturday described the Local Government primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State as peaceful and in compliance with the electoral guidelines of the party.

Speaking at the PDP primary election in Udenu Local Government Area, which was attended by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Chairman of ENSIEC, Chief Mike Ajogwu (SAN) who led a delegation of the commission to monitor the exercise, appreciated the large turnout of party faithful as well as their conportment and adequate security provided.

Chief Ajogwu noted that the commission in keeping with the electoral act dispatched its officials to the 17 Local Government Areas of the State to monitor the exercise, expressing satisfaction that the reports gathered clearly indicate that the PDP LG primaries were transparent and peaceful.

He appealed to the electorate to come out en masse to vote for candidates of their choice during the forthcoming November 4 Local Government Elections in Enugu State and urged all political parties participating in the elections to eschew all forms of violence to ensure a successful and peaceful contest.

“We are here to monitor the Local Government primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State. We have gone to Local Government by Local Government. We are satisfied that the people came out in their numbers and the primaries were transparent and adequate security was provided”, the ENSIEC chairman said.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Electoral Committee from the National Secretariat of the PDP, Hon. Ndubuisi Nwobu said that the exercise was peaceful and conducted in accordance with the electoral guidelines of the party for conduct of Local Government primary elections.

Hon. Nwobu commended the State Party leadership and Gov. Ugwuanyi for “the way and manner the exercise was conducted”,adding that the feat will “be highly recommended to other states to emulate”.

He expressed optimism that the party will win the elections and congratulated all the candidates for the victory at the primaries.

Gov. Ugwuanyi voted at the primary election which elected Hon. Frank Ugwu as the chairmanship candidate of the PDP in Udenu Local Government Area for the November 4 council elections.
