Governor Sullivan Chime
Revelations emerged yesterday that the embattled Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime who had been out of the country for over three months underwent a heart surgery in the United States of America in 2005.
This happened two years before he ran for the governorship election in 2007.
It was gathered that his predecessor, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, was said to have sponsored the heart surgery and subsequent treatment.
Chime was Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Enugu State between 1999 to 2007 when Nnamani of the Ebe-Ano fame was the State Governor.
Close insiders who pleaded anonymity for security reason alleged that Nnamani gave Chime N7m for the surgical operation in 2015.
However, the sources who could not specify the nature of the ailment noted that since then, the Governor is yet to fully recover.
One of the aides who hailed from Udi, Chime’s country home said: “His (Chime) heart was very flat and when he complained to Chima (Nnamani), he (Nnamani) had no option but to help a friend.”
It gathered that the father and son relationship between Chime and Nnamani dated back to the College of Immaculate Conception, Enugu, where they had their post primary education.
Things fell apart between them, which led Nnamani into forming the People for Democratic Change (PDC) to oust Chime in the 2011 general elections.
It would be recalled that during one of his campaigns last year, Nnamani claimed that he gave Chime N7m for a heart surgery in America.
“I recommended to him the doctor who should lead the team of surgeons when he gets to America. I did this for him when he complained to me and I noticed he was not feeling fine,” Nnamani had said in 2011.
Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Chuks Ugwoke said that the Governor had been out of the country since September 20 on accumulated leave.
Sources said he is in an Indian hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment for Leukemia and renal failure.
Last Sunday it was rumoured that he had passed away but Ugwoke said the man was recovering and “he is doing well.”
When contacted, spokesperson to the former governor Mr. Igbonekwu Ogazimora, said, “I don’t know much on that issue.
“I would have called him to inquire on the issue, but whenever I try to call him, I can’t reach him. So, whenever he call me, I will ask him then get back to you.”
