Enugu State government appears set to recover some portion of the Enugu International Conference Centre allocated to individuals by the immediate past administration.
This is as the government has threatened to demolish buildings and other structures being erected by private developers within the premises of the Centre, situated near the Okpara Square in Enugu capital city.
The government had through the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, ECTDA, directed the developers to stop further work at the site which was allocated to individuals by the former Sullivan Chime administration shortly before its exit from office.
The State House of Assembly had also passed a resolution condemning allocation of part of the conference centre land which was to serve as parking space to individuals and ordered the beneficiaries to stop further development of the plots.
But the developers most of who were said to be officials, relatives and friends of the former regime, ignored the directive and continued to erect buildings and fences on the said land.
However, the State Commissioner for ECTDA, Mr. Chidi Aroh, who visited the site Wednesday, said expressed dissatisfaction with the recalcitrant attitude of the developers and their contractors who have continued to flout government’s directive.
Aroh said that the government would soon demolish the structures since the developers have refused to comply with the stop work order served on them by his ministry.
According to him, the Ugwuanyi- led administration had no plan to witch-hunt anybody in the state but insisted that things must be done according to the constitutional framework or laws guiding the state.
The Commissioner told Journalists after inspecting some ongoing projects in the capital territory that stop work order had earlier been issued to the developers but regretted that the developers and the contractors have not complied with it.
The Commissioner further inspected the ongoing construction of the Park and Shop Mall beside the Enugu State House of Assembly where he observed that the Architect handling the building project had deviated from the original design.
He directed the developers to furnish his ministry with information regarding to the plan and design of the shopping mall without delay.
Aroh disclosed that the developers had earlier agreed to stop work on the project but went ahead with it.
But in swift reaction, Architect Ladi Olatunde who is incharge of the project, admitted that the drawing of the shopping mall was changed due to some problems encountered but maintained that they were going to resolve whatever the issue that has arisen.
The Commissioner however directed that the changes effected in the structural plan, designing must be done within seventy two hours and forwarded to the Ministry of Capital Territory.
Also inspected was the sight of the demolished building of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church at Zik Avenue, Enugu as well as some residents whose houses were gutted by fire and announced government’s plan to relocate the victims from the area.
