No fewer than three persons have been arrested in connection with the blast that rocked a polling station during the Presidential election in Enugu State, Inspector General of Police, Mr. Suleiman Abba has said.
Abba made this disclosure in Abuja during the IGP conference with state Commissioners of Police.
The police boss further stated that he would deploy more officers to Rivers and other crisis-ridden states to prevent incessant political killings across the nation.
He said, “First of all, I must commend our officers and men for their performance in the last election. They exhibited high sense of professionalism, impartiality, and non-partisanship to a great level.
“We are here to encourage them to do more so that they don’t rubbish what they had already achieved. We are re-strategising on crime prevention and control and that is why we are deploying more officers in states like Rivers and other volatile ones.
“We have so far arrested three suspects in connection with the Enugu bomb blast and so far, we have arrested 124 people for different electoral offences.”
He, however, lamented that there were some challenges during the March 28 election despite the fact that the police and other security agencies did their best to protect Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and other important places, as well as the citizens.
“Our coming together here today will proffer solution to these problems and we will ensure that they don’t crop up in the coming elections,” he said.
Abba said preliminary investigations had revealed that the late Kano Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Minkaila Abdullahi, and some members of his family died of inferno, contrary to an allegation that it was a case of suspected sabotage.
On the alleged death threats on Igbos by the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, IGP said “since the traditional ruler has denied the allegation, I am not in any position to state otherwise.”
