Godwin Ogenyi
The Commissioner for Poverty Reduction and Human Development, Enugu State, Mr. Godwin Ogenyi was Tuesday arrested by the police following the directive given by the State House of Assembly for lack of respect for lawmakers.
The Commissioner was earlier ordered to appear before the House in order to explain the efforts the state government is making towards reducing the plights of those affected by the ban on motorcycles (okada) in the state but, he refused to show up.
It was gathered that Ogenyi was sighted within the Assembly less than an hour before the sitting but refused to appear before the lawmakers until they adjourned to Thursday.
Angered by the commissioner’s nonchalant attitude, the House passed a resolution ordering that a warrant of arrest be issued against him and the police was immediately ordered ro get him arrested and be brought to the House during their next deliberation on Thursday.
Ogenyi who sensed the looming danger was seen rushing into the Assembly complex where the police reportedly arrested him.
He was taken away by security operatives who took him to the State Police Criminal Investigation Department where he was detained for some minutes before granted bail on self recognition.
DailyPost learnt that top government officials who were informed about the development came to the Police Headquarters to ensure that the commissioner was not kept behind bars.
It was gathered that every necessary contacts were made to the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Musa Daura, who reportedly waded into the matter.
Ogenyi who confirmed his apprehension yesterday said there was nothing unusual about it, stressing that he was wrong for failing to obey the lawmakers when he was invited in the first place.
He admitted that he had arrived at the premises even before the sitting for the scheduled dialogue on the activities of his ministry, but went to his office to answer nature’s call.
