Enugu appointments: Youths seek 40 percent from Gov. Ugwuanyi

Youth groups in Enugu State, on Thursday, urged Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to allocate at least 40 percent of political appointments to the youth population.

They made the call during a meeting coordinated by the National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN, Enugu State chapter. Other youths groups at the event included Ohanaeze Youth Council and the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS.

Reading a communique issued after the meeting, the chairman, NYCN, Enugu state chapter, Comrade Paschal Ugwu commended the Governor for his proactiveness in tackling security challenges and ensuring enduring peace in the state.

He said that the approval of the establishment and recruitment of forest guards by the governor to combat the menace of hoodlums in the state was commendable.

He reinstated the commitment of youths in the state to work with the state government to ensure security of lives and property in the state.

According to him, “the youths and students of Enugu state will like to commend the state Governor for his proactiveness in tackling insecurity in these few months.

“The approval for the employment of forest gurds in all the local government areas of Enugu state is a commendable effort. We wish to support the government in the fight security challenges in Enugu state.

“They further demanded that the governor should fulfill his pledge of running a youth inclusive government by appointing young persons into key positions in his government noting that among the youths are qualified individuals who can perform creditably well in various positions of leadership.

“We plead with his Excellency to consider us in relevant positions because we are ready to partner with this government. Being that 80% is the number of people that came out and voted for him, we are looking at 40%. His Excellency should look at 40% appointment of youths into his government.

“We wish to thank his Excellency for his reassurance to run a youth inclusive government. It is on record that the young people played a key role in the just concluded election. INEC recent report reveals that out 1,429,221 registered voters in Enugu state, persons within the age bracket of 18 to 35 years recorded 980,870 collection of PVCs whish represents 80 percent of the total registered voters.

“It is against this backdrop that we the Enugu youths and students humbly appeal that as consultations and considerations are on going, we appeal that his Excellency considers us for appointments as he goes about making his appointments in relevant positions.

“We also thank the governor for consulting stakeholders in the 17 local governments. We therefore demand that in the remaining appointments that he is going to make, that he should consult and favour the youths.

“He should bring us to the round table if need be. We know that his Excellency knows that we have competent young persons who have the technical know how to deliver his mandate to Ndi Enugu,” he said.
