Emulate Azikiwe who located UNN outside his hometown – NUC boss tells Governors

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Prof Julius Okojie yesterday decried the situation where every serving governor tries to locate state universities in their home towns while the successors attempt to relocate or cancel such institutions in order to also please their people.

Okogie, who spoke as a guest lecturer as part of activities marking the 10th convocation ceremony of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka urged Nigerians to emulate the detribalised nature of the Great Zik, who the university was named after.

While describing Azikiwe as “a selfless, visionary, national hero and pioneer education advocate,” he stated that Zik as the Founder of University of Nigeria, Nsukka could have cited the premier institution in his homestead of Onitsha but he allowed it in Nsukka, Enugu State.

While also calling for the emulation of the attribute of other founding fathers of the country like Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Sir Ahmadu Bello, he held that they could have located the Obafemi Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello Universities in their hometowns but they allowed the institutions to be cited in Ife and Zaria respectively.
