Ember months: Speed limit device will save millions of lives – FRSC

The Pankshin FRSC Unit Commander, Nnamdi Ikeh-Akabogu on Wednesday stated that the recently-introduced speed limiter device will save millions of Nigerians from untimely death during the ember months.

The Unit Commander made the assertion during the Ember Months Campaign Flag-off/Rally in Pankshin Local Government of Plateau in conjunction with a telecoms service provider and NURTW.

“FRSC introduction of the speed limiter devices was with a strong belief that it will curtail the massive loss of lives that usually occur as a result of road crashes brought about by speeding and over loading.

“The Christmas is fast approaching and we felt we should undergo the ember months rally to sensitize the public especially motorists on need for them to install the speed limiter device and preserves themselves and commuters, ’’ he said.

Ikeh-Akabogu expressed gratitude to the management of the telecoms service providers for their show of concern by partnering with the commission to sensitise the public against speeding and over loading in the ember months.

He called for the support of the NURTW leaders in making sure that their members acquire and install the speed limiter devices so as not to face the wrath of the authorities.

According to him, “I am sure all of us want do not just want to celebrate the coming Christmas but to see the new coming year 2017 hence the need for us to take precaution against road crashes.

“It is very easy to preserve lives if we as drivers resolve to use the speed limit devices: we believe as you all support us, we shall succeed in keeping many alive if not all to live and not die when they travel, ’’ he stated.

Also specking, a vendor of Speed Limiter devices, Mr Kingsley Okafor explained that the devices have five functions which include, limiting speed, tracking of vehicle and recording events during the journey among others, adding that there two types of the device.

He disclosed that while the big one with Global Positioning System, GPS, costs N40, 000, the other costs N35, 000 while installation costs N2, 000.

Mr Felix Ossai, Pankshin NDLEA Commandant, who commended the efforts of FRSC in saving the lives of Nigerians, warned motorists against the use of hard drugs so as not to jeopardize the lives innocent commuters.

The rally began with a road walk round the Pankshin town before converging on the FRSC unit command where a tape was cut to signify flagging off the Ember months.
