Elliot Ukoh: Between February election and Nigeria’s federal structure – Lest we forget

Less than a forthnight to the 2015 general elections, Boko Haram Warriors storms Maiduguri in yet another attempt to overrun the city, those who inspired the Boko Warriors by introducing Sharia into a multi religious country like Nigeria, want us to blame President Jonathan for the Boko Haram Madness.

Our usually self-centered Nigerian politicians have cleverly managed to redirect Nigerians attention to the February 14 struggle for the control of our oil wealth via the unjust Abacha Constitution, thereby diverting our attention from the reality that restructuring Nigeria into a truly federal entity is more important than elections.

It is a tragedy that close to 200 million people are locked up in a militarily inspired and unworkable 36 states unitary structure, held by the jugular by a fierce Islamic army totally committed to Islamizing the whole nation by force of arms.

While all these are going on, fellow compatriot have only one thing on their mind: how to be accommodated by the contending camps struggling to take over our collective patrimony and thereby control and manage our common wealth in these quasi unitary republic. Even though everybody knows that our problems will persist even if extra terrestrial beings were called in to run this strange unitary republic that is federal only in name.

Everybody knows that Nigerian cannot survive if radical political restructuring is delayed much further, everybody knows that continuous delay of full and total implementation of 2014 Confab resolutions as a first step could spell doom to the unity and survival of Nigeria.

Surprisingly, we choose to pretend that large crowds at campaign rallies, propaganda and blackmails or manipulating the system in order to seize central power would solve our structural problems.

The IYM avers that restructuring Nigeria into a true federalism and urgently addressing the issues that gave birth to Boko Haram are far more important than elections, if Nigeria does not survive as an entity, those who run for office and win elections will have no country to govern.

Nigerian must ask ourselves certain deep searching questions: for how long would we continue to live in self denial? What is the wisdom and gain in inspiring Boko Haram just so it could be used to rubbish Mr. President and paint him as ineffective? All for political reasons.

Who profits now that the cancer has grown out of control and turned its wrath on its sponsors? Are there any gains to anybody as lives and properties are destroyed everyday by the rampaging Islamists? Is there really any reason to delay the immediate restructuring of Nigeria by weakening the centre? Isn’t it clear by now to Nigerians and foreigners alike that the high stakes involved in the fierce and vicious struggle for central power is really the bane of our nation today?

As we call on all Nigerians to endorse President Jonathan on February 14 to continue the great and important life changing job of laying the building blocks for a greater tomorrow for all, we conclude that restructuring Nigerian into true federalism and containing the issues that inspired Boko Haram madness are more important than elections. End of discussion.
