The Commissioner of Police for Rivers State, Mr. Hosea Karma, has defended the Rivers State Police Command, insisting that his men were not compromised during last Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections in the state. Karma, disclosed this in Port Harcourt, adding that the police did not favour any party in the state on election day. “Security role is clearly defined. Our role is to provide level playing ground. We ensured that INEC materials, officials and voters were protected.
“On favouritism, we did not take part in the election and we did not take sides,’’ he said. The Rivers police boss also confirmed that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Akuku-Toru Local Government area was attacked on election day while preventing thugs from removing election materials. “In the process, a stone was thrown at him and he got injured. He has been treated and discharged. “This also shows how the police tried to defend and ensure security of the people on election day. “The DPO went to ensure that nobody was molested while carrying out their civic responsibility when he was attacked,’’ he said. According to him, the police did not prevent the APC in the state from delivering their protest letter to INEC because they had the right to do so. “When APC in the state had their reservation on the election and wanted to present their protest letter to INEC, the police gave them opportunity to do it,’’ he said.
