Orji Kalu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Abia North senatorial district, has reacted to reports of conniving with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to rig Saturday’s election.
Kalu, who expressed optimism of emerging victorious at the National Assembly poll scheduled for Saturday, Feb.23, said he is a believer in democracy, hence would not connive with INEC to falsify election results.
Kalu said this while addressing his supporters in his country home, Igbere, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
The former governor said that his popularity across the state would give him victory , hence he does not have to rig polls on Saturday.
“As a firm believer in democracy, I do not have to connive with officials of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before winning any election.
“The incumbent Senator, Mao Ohuabunwa does not deserve to be re-elected as he is in Abuja for sightseeing.
“Even in a free contest, Ohuabunwa would never defeat me,My goodwill in Abia will give me victory in a free, fair and credible poll.
“I am not afraid of election because of my popularity. My antecedents and accomplishments in all spheres of life will continue to speak for me.
“I have paid my dues in business, politics and philanthropy.
“I understand the challenges of our people and I have the right contacts and political sagacity to take our communities to the Next Level,’’ Kalu said.
The former governor further called on INEC, security agencies and other stakeholders to be vigilant to ensure the exercise was not manipulated.
“We must remain vigilant to frustrate any plan by anyone to thump-print ballot papers and fill result sheets before the poll,’’ he added.
He also emphasized the need to beef up security in Abia in order to forestall any plan to manipulate the electoral process.
DAILY POST had that the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial zone in the National Assembly, Mao Ohuabunwa on Thursday urged INEC to come out openly and caution Kalu over sharp practices by the governor ahead of Saturday’s Election.
Ohuabunwa claimed that Kalu and APC had been boasting of federal might to thwart the collective will of the people of Abia central in the upcoming Saturday.
