The former Governor of Kogi State, Chief Clarence Olafemi, has disclosed that the proliferation of firearms after the general elections was responsible for the high cases of kidnapping and armed robbery in the state.
According to him, kidnapping and armed robbery cases got increased immediately after the Presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.
Speaking with newsmen on the security situation in the state, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noted that those criminals were armed by some group of people, politicians and individuals to rig the election in their favour.
He pointed out that it was unfortunate that after the election, those youths armed with weapons now resulted in kidnapping and armed robbery in other to meet up with their needs.
“Armed robbery and kidnapping have been on the increase daily. The guns given to the youths by the politicians are now being used to commit crime.
“Election in a democratic setting must be free, fair and credible. Elections are no longer popular votes, politicians have bastardized the system.
“Election with intimidation with the use of arms against the people, all these are very disastrous to our democratic growths,” he said.
He, therefore, called on the security agents in the state to wade in and make sure that those in possession of illegal arms in the state were arrested.
He lamented that if the situation was not arrested now, the November 2 governorship election will be bloody in Kogi State.
Chief Olafemi called on all stakeholders in the state to work together and bring peace back to the Confluence State.
