Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State says the recent election of Pope Francis as the head of the Catholic Church would help the world refocus attention on the plight of the poor and the less privileged across the globe.
Chime who stated this in his good will message to the Church, also described the selection of a Pope from outside Europe as a milestone which demonstrated the open-mindedness of the church in the discharge of its episcopal functions.
He said the new Pope’s renowned humility and dedicated work with the poor in his native country before his election, fell in line with the traditional obligations of the Church, adding that his election was expected to renew and re-invigorate universal efforts towards alleviating the dismal conditions of the world’s poor masses.
Governor Chime also lamented the rising cases of armed conflicts and violence all over the world which according to him, was a major contributor to the continuous increase in the level of poverty.
He urged world leaders and other religious leaders to seize the opportunity of the advent of a new Pope to intensify efforts towards seeking for global peace, economic development and social justice, especially in developing and underdeveloped countries of the world.
Chime further congratulated the Church over the successful completion of the selection process, noting that the lessons learnt from the exercise would serve as a guide to religious and non-religious institutions around the world.
