Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Borno state has called on the Federal Government to stop the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, from conducting any election at the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, Camp in Borno state.
PDP said on Tuesday, during a meeting with its leadership that there was nowhere in the constitution where it says elections should be conducted in IDPs camp and as such did not know the reasons for INEC’s distribution of PVC at IDP camps.
According to the party, INEC in Borno state seemed to be dancing to the tune of one political party which is bent on conducting election in the IDP camp even as it also alleged that, voter cards have been issued out to the wrong people at the camps while others were asked to sell their cards.
Speaking with the convener of the meeting and PDP deputy governorship candidate , Barrister Ibrahim Birma told newsmen that, they are in Borno state to launch their campaign for the 2015 general elections, and what they observed so far were the anomalies already going on in the IDPs camp, which show that, the likelihood for a peaceful conduct of election in the state may depend on INEC’s willingness to stop plans to conduct election at the IDPs camp.
Birma asked to know what becomes of all the IDPs from Borno who are at camp in Abuja, Lagos, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe and the rest of the states. He said. “If IDPs must cast their votes during the 2015 elections, then what happens to those who fled the state due to insurgency? what explanation do they have regarding the constitution, which says election are to be conducted at units? I find this laughable,” he said.
He therefore, called on the Federal Government to ensure that everybody goes back to where they registered for the election. “We want all the road closed to be opened so that everybody will go back to where he or she registered to be part of the election as conducting elections in Maiduguri and Jere along cannot be an election. All the local governmenst in the southern Borno have people who are ready to vote. Nothing was taken to them, but they are distributing PVC at IDPs camp. For who?,” he asked.
