Election 2016: Trump confirms Hillary Clinton has called to congratulate him

Donald Trump has confirmed that his opponent in the 2016 US election, Hillary Clinton, has called to congratulate him on his stunning victory.

Trump defeated the former First Lady, after taking key swing states of Florida, North Carolina and Ohio as he succeeds in his long time ambition of “winning the race” to the White House.

Known for his “we will take back our country” comment, the billionaire businessman surpassed expectations and rubbished pollsters projection in Florida, where Mrs Clinton of the Democrats had been expected to win.

But Mrs Clinton’s hopes of a swift victory faded as the Republican picked up a series of states.

Mrs Clinton managed to win the battlegrounds of Virginia and Colorado, but she needed to take Michigan, Nevada, Iowa and Pennsylvania to revive her chances.

After a small delay, Trump appeared in front of his supporters, to give a victory speech.

“Sorry to keep you waiting, complicated business,” he started. “Thank you very much.”

“I just received a call from secretary Clinton. She congratulated us, it’s about us, on our victory, and I congratulated her and her family on a very very hard fought campaign. She fought it very well. Hillary has worked very long and very hard over a long period of time, and we owe her a major debt of gratitude to our country.

“Now it’s time for America to bind the wounds of division… I say it is time for us to come together as one united people.

“I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans, and this is so important for me.

“For those who have chosen not to support me… I’m reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together to unify our great country.”

Trump will become the 45th American president, replacing Barack Obama.
