Islamic Human Rights Commission of the United Kingdom (UK) has berated the federal government for proscribing the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, and refusing to release its leader, Sheikh El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Mallima Zeenah.

In a statement entilted, “New levels of cruelty from the Buhari regime”, released yesterday, IHRC Chair Massoud Shadjareh, described the proscription as a cynical move by the government.

The terse statement read, “If the reported proscription of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria is true, then this is a spectacularly cynical move on the part of the authorities.

“It is clear they wish to frustrate the growing pressure from inside Nigeria and around the world to release Sheikh El-Zakzaky and Mallima Zeenah.

“It is clear that the movement and its leaders are the innocents in this situation, and the Buhari regime the terroriser.”

DAILY POST reports that a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which labelled the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) a terrorist organisation and ordered its proscription by the federal government, has also received a lot of criticism locally.

However, Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, condemned the proscription and designation of the group; describing it as both immoral and illegal.
