The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu has confirmed the proscription of the Ibrahim El-Zakzakky-led Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) by the federal government, following deadly protests by the Shi’a members in Abuja.
Adamu made this known at a press conference on Tuesday.
While meeting with senior police officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, he said the Nigerian Government has officially banned the activities of Islamic Movement of Nigeria led by Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzakky in the country, PM News reports.
The presidency confirmed that the proscription of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) has nothing to do with banning the larger numbers of peaceful and law abiding Shiites in the country from practising their religion.
Garba Shehu, spokesman to President Muhammadu Buhari, had explained that the move was made to discourage wanton violence, murder and willful destruction of public and private property.
The IMN leader, Zakzaky has been in detention since December 2015 following the break-out of violence during a religious procession in Kaduna State.
