Ekwueme: Shagari, Tambuwal, Kalu, Daniel pay tribute to late ex-VP

Former President Shehu Shagari has condoled with the family of late former Vice President, Alex Ekwueme who died Sunday night.

He was the Vice President during Shagari’s administration in the second republic – 1979 and 1983

In a statement on Monday in Sokoto, Shagari, said that Ekwueme’s death was a huge loss to the entire nation.

Shagari described him as a brother and a humble Nigerian who contributed in various capacities to the nation’s development.

“It is with deep sense of loss that I learned about the demise of my brother and former vice president.

“On behalf of my family, I sincerely commiserate with Nigerians on his death. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.

Also, Former Abia State governor, Dr. Orji Kalu, has described the demise as a huge loss to the nation.

Kalu acknowledged that the contributions of Chief Ekwueme to the sociopolitical development of Nigeria raised him as an outstanding citizen of Nigeria.

According to the business mogul, the former Vice President was a silent but great achiever in all facets of life.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by his Special Adviser, Kunle Oyewumi, Kalu said, “the news of the passing of Chief Alex Ekwueme is devastating.”

“The former Vice President died at a time the country needed his wise counsel on national issues.

“He was a man of exceptional qualities. He championed the cause of a fair society in all his endeavours.

“Chief Ekwueme was a shining light beyond the political circle, and he will be remembered for promoting peaceful co-existence and unity in Nigeria. We have lost a pan African.”

The former governor prayed God to grant Ekwueme eternal rest and give his family the fortitude to bear the painful loss.

Also, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, in a statement by his spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, said Ekwueme was a distinguished legal luminary, exemplary politician and a great community leader.

“For us in Sokoto, Dr. Ekwueme’s death comes with extra pain because he was Vice President to one of our distinguished sons, Turakin Sokoto, Alhaji Shehu Shagari.

“The deceased proved himself an able lieutenant who together with other members of their team, gave their best for the unity, progress and stability of the Nigerian federation in the Second Republic and beyond.

“His death has therefore closed a chapter in the life of one Nigeria’s most respected voices who made his mark in both public and private sectors,” Tambuwal added.

He further described Ekwueme as a truly passionate Nigerian whose invaluable contributions to issues of national interest will be forever appreciated.

In his reaction, former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba (Engr.) Gbenga Daniel stated that the highly revered statesman remains a titan of modern Nigerian politics.

According to the former governor, late Ekwueme was an exceptional personality who lived a life full of achievements in his professional career as an architect of international repute and also in the field of politics.

“Articulate, focussed, disciplined and patriotic, Dr. Ekwueme held aloft democratic ideals of the nation’s founding fathers and never wavered in the quest for a better Nigeria. This won him great respect from across the political spectrum putting him at a foremost spot as a legend and natural leader”.

Daniel on behalf of his family, commiserated with the Ekwueme family, the good people of Anambra State and entire Nigerians on the demise of this great son of Africa as he prayed Almighty God to grant him eternal rest.​
