A Bill seeking to move the inauguration of the President-elect and the Vice President-elect from the Eagles Square to the precincts of the National Assembly, in line with what obtains in the United States of America, USA, and many other democracies, on Thursday, scaled through Second Reading at the Nigerian Senate.
The Bill sponsored by Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu got unanimous endorsement from Senators.
Ekweremadu, while leading debate on the general principles of the Bill, said the legal framework has 11 clauses.
He argued that the present practice in Nigeria is a misnomer because it is at variance with the practice in other developed democracies.
The Deputy Senate President added that the Bill would foster unity among the three arms of government in Nigeria.
The Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume while supporting the Bill, said it deserves speedy passage.
The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has however referred the Bill to the Senate Committee on Special Duties for further legislative actions and report back in four weeks.
The Bill provides for the inauguration ceremony of the President-elect and the Vice President-elect to take place at the arcade of the National Assembly, where the people are represented.
It also seeks the setting up of a Presidential Inauguration Committee, which shall consist of a serving member of the National Assembly as Chairman, six members drawn from the Legislature, two from the Executive, two from the Judiciary, and two from the civil society.
