The Ekiti State Government has paid the outstanding counterpart funds for 2015 and 2016 UBEC/SUBEB projects which the immediate past administration in the state neglected throughout its four years in office.
Governor Kayode Fayemi, who made this known in Ado- Ekiti while flagging of the 2016 Teachers Professional Development (TPD) Training Programme jointly organised by the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board(SUBEB) and the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEC), said his administration would relaunch and refocus the basic education sector in the state.
Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, Fayemi said that his administration has prioritised education, being one of its cardinal programmes.
The Governor said his administration would embark on far-reaching reforms intended to boost teaching and learning in schools and ultimately improve service delivery in the sector.
He restated the commitment of his administration to the welfare of teachers, harping on the need for them to reciprocate government’s gesture by working conscientiously towards achieving the desired goals.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr (Mrs ) Eunice Oladimeji, who described training and retraining as catalysts for improving productivity among teachers, said the present training programme was designed to improve the practical experiences of participants on the job.
Oladimeji urged participants to pay rapt attention at the forum in order to achieve a positive multiplier effect.
Also speaking, the Zonal Coordinator of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) in the state, Mr Joshua Arema commended the Fayemi administration for abolishing the payment of school fees and levies in all public primary schools in the state.
He said UBEC would continue to collaborate with the Ekiti SUBEB in improving service delivery and making basic education accessible to children of school age in the state.
Over 300 mathematics and science teachers drawn public primary schools across the state are taking part in the three-day training programme holding in three designated centres.
