Ekiti market women intervene in legislative, executive face-off

Market women from the 16 local government areas of Ekiti on Wednesday met with members of Ekiti State House of Assembly to broker peace between them and the executive.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the market women were led by their leaders (Iyalojas and Iyalajes) from the 16 councils.

Mrs Eunice Okunlale, the President of Ekiti Market Women, who also doubles as the Iyaloja of Ise-Ekiti, led the women from the various council groups to the meeting.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members received the women, while All Progressives Congress (APC) members were absent at the meeting also attended by the clerk of the House, Mr Tola Esan. Okunlale.

NAN reports that the leader of the PDP caucus in the House, Mr Dele Olugbemi (PDP, Ikole II), received the market women on behalf of other members of the house.

He assured them of the resolve of the House to continue making laws that would bring about development in the state.

The lawmaker urged the women to pray for the success of Gov. Ayo Fayose’s administration.

Speaking with newsmen after the meeting, Okunlale said the women were in the House to sue for peace between the legislators and the executive arms of government.

The women leader, who said they were disturbed by the development in the state in the last one week, expressed the need for unity between the two arms of government.

She appealed for cooperation between the two arms to enable the new governor to succeed in his transformation bid.

Okunlale appealed to the APC members in the house to join hands with their PDP counterparts in their resolve to move the state forward.

It will be recalled that the PDP faction of the House had on Monday approved the dissolution and reconstitution of Caretaker Committees for the 16 local government areas of the state.

Olugbemi presided over the sitting as the speaker ex-tempore.
