As reactions continue to trail last week’s Ekiti gubernatorial election, Senator Abu Ibrahim representing Katsina South Senatorial district and Chairman Senate Committee on Police Affairs has described the polls that saw John Kayode Fayemi emerging as the governor-elect as generally satisfactory.
Speaking with DAILY POST in Abuja, Ibrahim admitted that there might be challenges of vote-buying in some quarters, but not as serious as reported.
He, however, blamed voters for luring politicians into vote-buying, saying that it’s not a good development as it encourages stealing when such politicians are voted into office.
“On Ekiti elections, based on comments of stakeholders, observers and even what I saw being transmitted live, I think, it was generally commendable. ”
“For me, there was no serious allegation. People said they were selling and buying votes in Ekiti, vote-buying is illegal, but selling vote is also illegal.”
He urged voters to stop selling their votes during elections, insisting that contestants were always ready to buy their votes once they are ready to sell.
“So it’s a matter of sensitising Nigerians. It’s not a good development for voters to ask contestants to come and buy their votes and by doing that, you are already giving him the chance to steal,” the lawmaker emphasised.
