Ekiti cabinet: Fayemi must appoint loyal, competent party members – APC chieftain

A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Dr. Olusegun Osinkolu, has advised the governor-elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi, to place high premium on loyalty to the party and competence while composing his cabinet after taking over on October 16 as the Governor of the state.

Osinkolu, who is a senatorial aspirant, held that the only way Fayemi can achieve success was to resist attempt from any quarter to force incompetent persons or someone found to be disloyal to the party. He however stated that politicians who worked for the victory of Fayemi should be considered in terms of political appointments.

Speaking in Ado Ekiti on Monday on the expectations of the people under the incoming administration that would take off after the expiration of Governor Ayodele Fayose’s mandate, Osinkolu said nothing will profit the state and the general populace when people are appointed based on association, rather than on merit.

The APC Chieftain, who is gunning for the senatorial ticket of the party to contest the 2019 general election in Ekiti North senatorial district, said it will do the state a lot of benefits for the Governor-elect to bring in APC members with the right expertise to run his government.

On the ongoing litigation at the Election Petition Tribunal challenging Fayemi’s victory, Osinkolu explained that the APC candidate won the election because people were already disillusioned with one-man-show government being run by Governor Fayose.

He said, “To defeat an incumbent governor like Fayose was an uphill task, but the APC achieved the arduous task because they were committed and resolute to bring a change to the people.

“What I got from the way voters reacted during the July 14 governorship election was that, they needed a better government, which they believed Dr. Fayemi could offer, so we must not disappoint them.

“In order not to disappoint the electorate, the cabinet must be populated by competent people and this should not be done at the expense of politicians who facilitated the resounding victory. They must be considered because Ekiti APC has a lot of highly educated people with flourishing careers in their private lives that can make them function as technocrats and politicians.

“What accounted for APC dismal failure in 2014 was traceable to ill-feelings that politicians were not patronized the way technocrats were, so this time must be different.

“There are no technocrats that anybody wants that can’t be got in APC. There are renowned medical doctors, lawyers and other professionals as card-carrying members. So these people must be patronized to bring stability to our party.”

“When competent party men are appointed into cabinet, they will be able to build a strong bridge between the government and the people. They will also ensure that party succeeds in the subsequent elections, than those that will treat the people with contempt and think less about the future of the party,” he pointed out.

Osinkolu however urged APC members to remain undaunted despite the petition filed by the PDP candidate in the last election, Prof Kolapo Olusola against Fayemi.

“A lot of rumours were being spread around that the PDP had evidence of falsification of results against the APC, all these were lies. The people of Ekiti freely gave us the mandate and that can’t be upturned by the PDP’s evil machination.

“So, the PDP knew it has no strong case against Fayemi, all it wanted to do is to look for ways to hold the party together ahead of 2019. The litigation was just a frivolous one that won’t yield any positive result for the PDP,” he stated.
