Some members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly have alleged threat to their lives and asked the police in the state to protect them from some people they claimed were threatening them.
The Speaker of the House, Kola Oluwawole, who made the allegation while addressing newsmen at the chambers on Tuesday, claimed that a red Volkswagen Golf car was being “used by some unidentified men to trail our members.”
Oluwawole in the petition he signed, listed the other members allegedly being trailed as Dr. Samuel Omotoso, chairman of the Assembly’s Committee on Information; Mr. Dayo Akinleye, Mr. Samuel Jeje and Mr. Fajana Ojoade, and claimed that “the affected members are living in palpable fear.”
He said: “The red Volkswagen golf car with registration number ADK 167 EV, trailed Hon. Omotoso from Bank Road to Textile/Bashiri, road while the same car trailed me to School of Nursing/Ori Apata area of Ado Ekiti.”
In the petition dated October 18, 2016, and addressed to the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, Oluwawole said: “From our findings, we have discovered that fresh onslaught is to be unleashed on the House of Assembly because of our refusal to cooperate with external forces that are desirous of removing our governor.”
He blamed All Progressives Congress members in the state, saying they were in a collaboration with “the suspended member of the House, Hon. Gboyega Aribisogan and others,” and further alleged that “having tried all they could do to lure or coerce members of the House of Assembly into their evil plot to impeach the governor. Their plan is not to assassinate some of our members, with a view to conducting bye-elections into their seats and rig APC into the House through the back door.”
On the steps taken so far on the allegation, the Speaker said “the Commissioner of Police in the state was the first to be informed. We have also informed other necessary security agencies,” and added that “the police and the security agencies are to figure out who the owner of the vehicle is and other things that would help them in their investigation because we have given them the necessary information.”
On what actions the security agents had taken, Oluwawole said “they are still working and I believe that they are on top of the situation. Some six, fully armed hefty guys were here and specifically asked questions on how often we move in the Assembly. We don’t want to joke with this situation because that was what happened in the time of Aderiye. However, we are not afraid because God is with us.”
