Ekiti 2014: Fayose, Oni on collision course

Indications have emerged that former Governors of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose and Segun Oni may clash ahead of the 2014 governorship elections.

This is coming on the heels of the failed reconciliation effort to bring both People’s Democratic Party stalwarts to agree on a common front.

Both men have been at loggerheads since the conclusion of the March 18, 2012 State Congress of the party where Fayose’s loyalists emerged victorious.

To show their grouse, loyalists of the PDP‘s South-West vice chairman boycotted the election midway to the end of the Congress, citing violation of the party’s guidelines on the conduct of the election.

The camp also called for the dissolution of the present EXCO, demanding fresh elections or harmonisation – a move that will see them hold some positions.

But in his response, Fayose stressed that the State Congress was a forgone matter, urging the opposing camp to accept defeat. However, he added that the State PDP would accept harmonisation if the national body gave the go-ahead.

Presently, Oni has refused to associate with party officials from Ekiti since he became a PDP national officer.

Already, he is reportedly supporting a governorship candidate from Ekiti South Senatorial District as against Fayose who believes that the party should throw the contest open.

As the state chapter of the party remains largely divided over the forthcoming polls, analysts say this may affect their chances of defeating a formidable and more coordinated Action Congress of Nigeria, whose member and incumbent Governor, Kayode Fayemi ,has been tapped to run for a second term.
