EFCC arrests ex-council chairman for fraudulently enriching himself


Former chairman of Sabon Gari Local Government of Kaduna state, Mr. Kasimu Abubakar has been arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to a statement signed by the spokesman of the commission, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren in Abuja, the arrest of Abubakar fondly called Abasco followed a petition alleging that the former council boss abused his office to enrich himself including illegal acquisition of property worth billions of Naira.

Uwujaren said while investigating, the operatives of the commission stormed the local council secretariat but to their dismay discovered that evidence that will assist in their investigation had been destroyed in an inferno that gutted the council secretariat building, particularly the Treasury Department.

In the statement, the spokesman said, “However, in the course of executing a search warrant at the home of the suspect, several official documents belonging to the local government including, but not limited to original copies of payment schedule of the local government staff, tax clearance certificates and official files of the local government that are not suppose to be in his custody as an ex- official of the council, were recovered.”

Uwujaren added that the commission was able to discover some of the local government property that the suspect had converted to his personal use and many others scattered in different locations in the state .

He however said the suspect has made useful statement while investigation still continues.
