The 740 delegates at Monday’s governorship primaries in Edo have been advised to leave the venue of the exercise after voting.
Chairman of the primaries committee, Gov. Dave Umahi of Ebonyi, gave the advice at the commencement of voting in the primaries taking at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that voting commenced at about 1.50 p.m. after accreditation of the delegates, which was conducted at three different centres in the city.
Umahi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries in Benin, has assured aspirants of fairness and transparent process as delegates commence voting at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin at 1: 49 PM..
The committee wich has Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta, gave the assurance while addressing members shortly before commencement of voting by delegates.
Umahi said that the measure was to ensure sustained orderliness in the exercise, assuring that it would be credible, fair and free.
“We have no special instructions from our national headquarters except the one from God, which are fairness, equity and justice.
“We have nobody in mind, but we pray that God will give us the best candidate and we pledge that we will be transparent in the process so that other aspirants will support whoever emerges as candidate.
“And because we are determined, God will crown our efforts with success at the Sept. 10 governorship election,’’ he said.
Three aspirants – Chief Solomon Edebiri, Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Mr Mathew Uduoeyekemwen are contesting for the party ticket in the election.
On Saturday, Mr Godwin Obaseki defeated 11 other aspirants to emerge as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming poll.
