ECOWAS Community Court of Justice laments poor funding

The Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States has said that poor funding is responsible for the slowdown in the implementation of its 2013-2015 strategic plan and action plan.

Justice Maria Do Ceu Silva Montiero, President of the Court, revealed this during the opening ceremony of the 9th meeting of the Strategic Planning Coordinating Committee, which held at the Tinapa Lakeside Hotel in Calabar, Cross River State.

Montiero, who spoke in Portuguese, requested adequate funding to enable the court implements its Community Strategic Framework for 2016-2020

“The 2013-2015 strategic plan/action plan of the Community Court of Justice was only formally adopted by the court in July 2013. Due to time and funding constraints, we have not been able to implement some key programmes in the strategic/action plans.

“We are facing a very acute office accommodation crisis. It is of paramount importance to provide a conducive working environment for the court and preserve its image as the regional court of the community”, she said.

Montiero said the Community Strategic Framework would make available an important tool for the realization of community goals and objectives.

In addition, she elucidated that designing and producing strategic plans or frameworks was not just the vision, but that rapt attention should be paid on its implementation.
