Economy review tops Saraki’s address as Senate reconvenes on Tuesday

Review of the State of the Nigerian economy topped Senate President’s address as federal lawmakers resumes from their annual recess on Tuesday. A press release issued in Abuja on Monday and made available to DAILY POST, said the 8th Senate in consideration of the economic recess would focus on providing enduring solutions through legislations.

It noted that “the Senate will focus the majority of its legislative days on solutions to tackling the recession and the timely passage of the 2017 federal budget.”

The statement further revealed that legislators have had opportunities of getting first hand information from their various constituencies in the course of recess and that they discovered the severe impact of economic downturn on local communities.

Saraki added that “The conditions on ground demand that we put forth our best efforts to get the economy moving and people back to work”.

“Since the commencement of the recess, Nigeria has officially fallen into recession and last Friday, Standard and Poors (S&P) down graded Nigeria’s credit rating.

“Additionally, inflation has caused the price of basic food items to skyrocket severely impacting the availability of food in many households that live below the poverty line.”

Saraki, who last week, issued a statement on what the red chamber plans to do on recession, – expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome the crisis if leaders put aside their political differences and commit to moving the nation forward.
