Economic activities grounded in Calabar as PHED throws capital into darkness

Close to a month after a House wife and a student of Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH) were reportedly killed at no 14 Adak Uko street in Calabar, Calabar South and part of Calabar Municipal and Odukpani local government have remained in darkness and without electricity supply for about a month now.

No reason has so far been given by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) of Nigeria regarding the development. Economic, Social and Political activities in the area have been brought to a standstill.

Investigations conducted by our correspondent revealed that cult and cult related activities including armed robbery and kidnapping have continued to strive in the absence of power supply.

The outage has also affected the economy as well political activities in the area.

The business men and women that make their leaving from selling of foodstuff, restaurant operators, beer parlours closed down as they complaint of no money to buy fuel to power their generator for those that have. Sadly, political gathering could not hold as usual as politicians ended meetings abruptly for fear of unexpected since there was no electricity.

Speaking with our correspondent, a cool store operator who gave his name as Thomas Akpan lamented the outage of electricity in the state capital, explaining that the action has caused him untold hardship and as he has lostseveral thousands of Naira.

Also lamenting, a fish seller at Lagos street markets complained that where she normally puts her unsold fish has no electricity for over a week. “The owner of the cold room called me today to come and remove my fish, where will I take them to, the restaurants I supply these fishes are not willing to buy more because of poor patronage,” she fumed.

Interestingly, our correspondent who monitored the activities of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) observed that the company had announced that there would be power outage for two weeks, noting that the company was embarking on an emergency maintenance in Ikot Ekpene/Calabar line.

Sadly, a senior staff met at the PHED who pleaded that his name should not be mentioned told DAILY POST that electricity would not be restored soon to the area as the company was not in a hurry to do same. “My brother, please don’t mention my name, the company may not give that area light until after Christmas.” He declined divulging further information.
