Ebonyi cannot afford to be in opposition – Onu warns

National Chairman of the defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party, ANPP, and Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has charged his people to quickly embrace the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, warning that his home state of Ebonyi cannot afford to be in opposition.

Onu, who disclosed this while addressing an enlarged stakeholders meeting of the state chapter of APC at his Uburu country home in Ohaozara Local Government over the weekend, said the state has tremendous potentials and must support the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to harness them.

The former Governor of old Abia state expressed displeasure with the level of development in the country, especially his home state, pledging to do his best to ensure that more wealth and new jobs are created and the economy diversified.

He explained that Buhari inherited a battered economy from the past administration and was working round the clock to fix it through diversification of the economy. Onu reiterated the determination of his ministry to drive the nation’s quest for a strong economy by adding value to the country’s agricultural produce and other abundant mineral resources.

According to him, “Nigeria has had a mono-product economy and because of that, whenever there is turbulence, we feel it so much. “If our economy had been diversified over these years and there is a drop in the price of crude oil, our economy wouldn’t have been suffering as we are witnessing today.

“This is where the Ministry of Science and Technology will play an important role; I will not sleep until the economy is diversified.”

While debunking speculations that his recent visit to the state governor, Engr Dave Umahi was to mend fences with him, the minister stressed that he had no qualms with the governor, explaining that the visit was to console him over the death of his mother.
