Ebola: Wogu, NLC urge doctors to suspend strike

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, and the Vice President, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Issa Aremu, have appealed to striking doctors to call off their industrial action in order to assist the federal and state governments combat the outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

According to Wogu, who spoke yesterday, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) should reconsider their stance by listening to the yearnings, cries and sufferings of Nigerians and go back to work as early as possible in view of the emergency at hand.

His words: “Well, we are still discussing. Other people have intervened but I believe strongly that the strike will come to an end very soon, earlier than expected by Nigerians. But at the same time, I urge the NMA and the NARD to reconsider their current position on this strike and go back to work because Nigerians are yearning seriously, asking them to come back in the face of several emergencies that are taking place within the period of this strike.

“So I join other Nigerians, in particular, to urge NMA, to reconsider their stand and listen to the yearnings, cries and sufferings of Nigerians and go back to work as early as possible.”

For the Vicve President of NLC, all the parties must look at the current situation and shelve the industrial action.

He said, “All the parties must look at the emergency in our hands and put the conflict behind us and they have to all resume negotiation. I am saying both the government and the doctors have to look at the bigger picture of rampaging epidemic.”
