Barring any last minute change, Nigeria will be officially declared Ebola free, next week by the World Health Organisation, WHO, the UN agency said today in Geneva.
Both Nigeria and Senegal are slated to be declared Ebola free if they successfully complete a 42 day period without new cases.
A statement released today by WHO showed that Nigeria may be cleared on the 20th of October, the day it completes its 42 day waiting period.
“If the active surveillance for new cases that is currently in place continues, and no new cases are detected, WHO will declare the end of the outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Nigeria, Monday, October 20 and Senegal on Friday, 17 October, ” it said.
“The 42-day period is twice the generally accepted maximum incubation period of the virus”, the statement said.
