Ebola: WHO says 4,500 dead

The World Health Organisation yesterday announced that a total of 4,493 people have so far died from the current Ebola Virus Disease outbreak.

The United Nations agency also said the situation in the worst hit countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone is getting worse by the day.

The agency also said that about 8 8,997 cases have been confirmed, while suspected cases of the disease has been reported in seven countries as at 12th of October with majority of it in the three West African countries. WHO added that a handful of health workers are ill in Spain and United States of America.

The WHO report said: “It is clear that the situation in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone is deteriorating, with widespread and persistent transmission of (Ebola)”

According to the report, Guinea has recorded 843 deaths with the rate of infections increasing due to a spate of infection in the capital Conakry and adjoining Coyah district.

WHO reports further that it is having problems with data gathering in Liberia, making it difficult for the agency to draw conclusions on the epidemic in the country. It believes the number of cases in the Liberian capital, Monrovia is under reported.

In a related development, the United States is deploying about 400 troops to help contain the spread of the disease in West Africa with the bulk of the number to be concentrated in Liberia.
