The Rivers State government has cautioned people of the state to be careful when they receive visitors from other parts of the world, as the end-of-year festive season draws near.
The Commissioner for Health, Doctor Sampson Parker, who made the call while briefing newsmen in Port Harcourt, said it was necessary for the people to remain alert to the threat of Ebola, which is still ravaging other West African countries.
The commissioner confirmed the receipt of two hundred million naira from the Federal Government’s Ebola Intervention Fund.
Doctor Parker also confirmed that authorities in the Dallas, Texas, United States have contacted the Rivers State Government for advice on how it managed to contain the Ebola outbreak in the state.
The enquiry followed the death of the US index case at a hospital in Dallas, as well as the isolation of several individuals, who had made contact with the deceased.
Parker said, “We want to use this opportunity to thank the President of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for fulfilling his promise by releasing the sum of two hundred million Naira to the Rivers State government.
“With regard to the strike embarked upon by the health workers, we are trying to resolve their issue. We assure you that meetings are being held to resolve their concerns. Now that the Governor has intervened, we hope that they will soon go back to work.
“I received an e-mail that on the 17th, I will be on the web talking with them in Dallas, telling them how we managed our case in Rivers state.
“That is what we should be talking about. This is one thing we have done right and we cannot afford to be spoiling ourselves.”
