Ebola: Reps to interface with Minister, NMA over schools’ resumption date

The Chairman of the House of Reps Committee on Education, Aminu Suleiman, yesterday said in Lagos that the House will meet with the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau, on Monday to resolve the controversies generated by the resumption date for schools.

He made this known during his committee’s visit to the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos, and the Federal College of Education, (Technical), Akoka, Lagos, as part of their oversight function to tertiary institutions.

According to Aminu, “In the legislature, we have decided to abide by the Nigerian Medical Association position because it is more superior and professional and has been taking by those that are supposed to drive this project.

“In the first place the NMA has advised that the reversal will not be in the best interest of the country.”

“This we have scheduled for Monday next week so that we can interface together and arrive at the very best objective position for the country,” Aminu said.

The lawmaker stressed that as representative of the people, the House intends to invite the Executive through the Minister, and the NMA to reconcile matters on the controversy.

He noted that the House had earlier gone by the position of the Minster of Health on the matter, saying the committee would however, rub minds with stakeholders on the superior position put forward by the NMA.

DailyPost recalls that the NMA had faulted government’s decision to reopen the schools on September 22, arguing that school resumption ought to have been delayed until the last case of Ebola virus disease had been disposed of in the country.
