Ebola: Ekiti differs on resumption date as Ondo, Kwara approve September 22

The Ekiti State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers has hinted that it would not honour the September 22, 2014 school resumption date as directed by the Federal Government until a contrary directive came from its national body.

The Federal Government shifted the resumption dates for all private and public schools in the country till Monday as a result of the recent outbreak of the Ebola Disease Virus in some southern states.

Ekiti NUT Chairman, Samuel Akosile, who gave the indication in Ado-Ekiti, explained that all necessary steps and measure must be taken to curtail the spread of dreaded Ebola virus.

Also, the State Deputy Governor, Modupe Adelabu, said the state would not rush into any resumption on the premise that the present situation called for caution.

However, the Kwara and Ondo states government have directed that primary and secondary schools, both private and public, in the state should resume on Monday (September 22, 2014).

The states noted that their position was in line with insistence of the Federal Government that the schools across the country resume on the day despite the threat by NUT to embark on strike if adequate provision was not made to prevent spread of the Ebola virus in schools.

A statement by the Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade, said government had made necessary provision for the safe return of pupils and students to their schools.

Also, Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Saka Onimago, gave the resumption directive in a statement signed by his press secretary, Fatai Dankazeem.

He also said provision had been made for two teachers in each school in the state to undergo training on Ebola prevention.
