The Commissioner of Police in Cross River, Mr Henry Fadairo, has advised parents in the state to prevail on their children to desist from use of illicit drugs. Fadairo gave the advice on Thursday in Calabar, at a meeting with stakeholders in communities in Calabar South.
He expressed worry over the rate of youth involvement in drug abuse, and said that the trend was particularly noticeable at Bayside area of Calabar South.
He, therefore, said that the meeting was to brainstorm on how to address the issue.
The commissioner promised to collaborate with the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to ensure that the area was rid of the menace.
“I am ready to give NDLEA support to ensure that the bayside area of Calabar South is totally free from drug usage by youths.
“Most of these youths, after taking these drugs engage in kidnapping, armed robbery and other heinous crimes.
“We need to fashion out ways to curb this menace. Cross River is known for peace and hospitality; we must maintain that peace that the state is known for.
“Last week, we paraded almost 24 suspects, most of them were suspected cultists, armed robbers and kidnappers,’’ he said.
Mrs Majorie Asuquo, Chairman of Calabar South Local Government Area, said that the council was already building an office for NDLEA in the area.
Asuquo said that the presence of the agency in the area would check drug abuse by youths, adding that the council would demolish all suspected hideout of criminals in the area.
She commended the police for their continued presence in the area and promised to work with them to ensure that Calabar South remained crime-free.
