Driver docked over alleged manslaughter


A 35-year-old driver, Taiwo Shittu, on Wednesday appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun, charged with reckless driving resulting in the death of a woman. The accused, who resides at No. 14, Ogunrinde St., Ota, is facing a two-count charge of manslaughter and reckless driving.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan. 15 at about 10.45 a.m. at Ilo-Awera Road, Ota.

Mustapha said the accused, being the driver of an Iveco Truck with registration no. AAA 256 XP; drove the vehicle in a dangerous manner which led to the death of 31-year-old, Bose Sosanya.

The offences, the prosecutor said, contravened Section 5 of the Federal Highway Act. Cap. 135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2006.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.I. Adelaja, granted the accused a N400,000 bail, with two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties should be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and should be gainfully employed.

Adelaja also directed that the sureties should swear to an affidavit of means and produce evidence of payment of 2015 tax to Ogun State Government.

In addition, one of the sureties, she said, must be the owner of a developed landed property and the addresses of the sureties should be verified by the police.

The case was adjourned till March 25 for mention.
