Invited guests at the 18th Annual Thisday Awards that held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Tuesday defended the integrity of the country by insisting that American National Anthem cannot be played before the Nigerian anthem.
Moments after former American President Bill Clinton walked in with Publisher of Thisday Newspaper, Nduka Obaigbena and Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, the Master of Ceremony announced that the American Anthem be played before the Nigerian anthem to the chagrin of the audience.
The statement led to some minutes of disquiet as the guests would tolerate nothing of such . They openly kicked against the idea and demanded a reversal, insisting that such arrangement was not only wrong but an insult and disregard for Nigeria and its people.
The organisers quickly changed gear and the Nigeria national anthem was played, followed by Ogun State anthem.
The American anthem was eventually abandoned.
The event was put together by Thisday to honour Nigeria’s best teachers. In all, fifteen teachers across the country were rewarded.
