The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has dismissed suggestions linking the recent hostage taking of three religious clerics, including the TEKAN President in Kaduna State, to its upcoming election.
Fellowship of Churches of Christ in Nigeria had on Tuesday confirmed the abduction of its President, Rev. Emmanuel Nziggau and two other clerics, Rev. Iliya Anto, and Rev. Yakubu Dzarma (Rtd). Anto, was later set free.
TEKAN General Secretary, Rev. Moses Ebuga in a press briefing had told newsmen that the abduction of TEKAN leaders may not be separated from the upcoming CAN elections, adding that the Church had received threat messages from anonymous individuals.
However, the Youth Wing President of CAN, Daniel David Kadzai has come up to note that incidents of kidnapping have been in Nigeria for many years and therefore should not be connected to CAN election.
Kadzai also pointed out that CAN as a body had been going through elections processes in the past without problems, adding that the abductors of the TEKAN President were criminal elements who wanted to cause confusion and disunity among Christians.
He also refuted that the federal government had a hand in the selection of CAN president adding that “our call is to Christians and Nigerians at large to unite for our country and we want Christians to know that there is no rift among the members of CAN.”
