Don’t allow poor masses become targets of austerity measures – TUC warns FG

The Federal Government has been called upon to put remedial measures in place to insulate the poor masses in the country from becoming the targets of the newly introduced austerity measures occasioned by the current drop in the price of crude oil in the international market.

The call was made by the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC in a statement by its president, Comrade Boboi Bala Kaigama.

The TUC president cautioned the Government on the inherent dangers in austerity measures warning that all stakeholders’ in the society must be part of the implementation processes for the policies to trickle down to rural areas.

He said: “We call on the Federal Government to put in place necessary policy measures that would ensure that the newly introduced austerity measures, following the continued drop in oil price in international market do not take the masses as target.

“This is because the austerity programmes administered by Western governments in the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis were, of course, intended as a remedy, a tough but necessary course of treatment to relieve the symptoms of debts and deficits and to cure recession”, he added.

“Our worries over the Federal Government’s introduction of austerity measures show that the cost of austerity can be calculated in human lives”, he further said.
