Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, Dolphins FC have changed their name to Rivers United Football Club.
This development was confirmed by the League Management Company (LMC), via their Twitter handle following a request from the Rivers State Government.
“Dolphins Football Club now Rivers United Football Club,” the LMC tweeted.
“The LMC agreed to the name change this evening upon formal request by the Govt of Rivers.”
Shehu Dikko also explained that their request was granted, as the new name was not offensive or prejudicial to national unity.
The new logo of Rivers United bears the similitude of a dolphin and a shark, indicating that a merger with Sharks FC might be on the cards.
Rivers United begin their NPFL campaign this Sunday against Enyimba.
