The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, said its leader, Kayode Obembe, on Friday withdrew his resignation letter, hours after he tendered it.

Obembe had on Thursday announced the suspension of the strike action embarked upon by the union following the appeal by the government sequel to the outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in the country.

In his letter, he noted that, “There has been a request for clarification about the two postings from the NMA secretariat on the NMA blog. I want to make it categorically clear that I stand by the very letter of the document that I signed – THAT THE STRIKE WAS SUSPENDED.

“And since upon my INTEGRITY AND HONOUR, I cannot continue to drive the doctrine that ‘STRIKE CONTINUES’, I hereby tender my letter of resignation as NMA President”.

Confirming the latest development, the NMA Friday night wrote on its twitter handle (@nmanigeria): “In the wake of incessant controversial reports flying around on the purported resignation of the NMA President and suspension of #NMAstrike…We wish to state unequivocally that the said letter has since been WITHDRAWN and the substantive President of NMA is still Dr Kayode Obembe.”

On reports that the doctors had suspended their strike, based on a letter by Mr. Obembe, the union said “It’s also apt to state that the on-going Industrial Action by Nigerian Doctors has NOT been called off. Not until the FG heeds our demands.

“Consultations are still on-going and we shall update you with progress reports. To all concerned Doctors and members of the public, THANK YOU”.
