The Rivers state Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Nigerian Association has called on the State Government to declare a state of emergency in the health sector of the state.
The NMA made the call at a media briefing held at the Braithwait Memorial Specialist Hospital, Port Harcourt.
State Chairman of the NMA, Furo Green said the call became imperative following the poor state of the health sector.
Green said a lot of things went wrong in the health sector under the immediate past administration despite calls by health workers.
The NMA Chairman also called for the implementation of the approved salary structures for medical doctors in Rivers State.
He said the Rivers State Government has under the previous government refused to implement the doctors salary scale as approved by the federal government.
Green further appealed to the State government to fast track the take off of the Medical school in the Rivers State University of Science and Technology.
“After carefully evaluating the state of the Health sector today, we call for a declaration of a state of emergency in the health sector. Many health institutions were established in the last administration for the primary level but secondary level has been abandoned.
“We seek for the urgent completion of the abandoned renovation works in Braithwait Memorial Specialist Hospital, BMSH.
“We call for BMSH to be run as an autonomous tertiary health institution with its own board rather than its present state as a glorified general hospital.
“We call for an urgent design for training and re-training in the health sector in Rivers state”.
The NMA expressed the hope that the Governor Nyesom Wike-led administration will transform the health sector.
