National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has thrown its weight behind the recall process of the Senator representing Kogi West senatorial district, Senator Dino Malaye.

NANS on Thursday frowned at attempts by some politicians to halt the process by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

National President of NANS, Aruna Kadiri, told newsmen in Abuja that moves to intimidate the commission in a lawful exercise of its constitutional mandate was unfortunate and against democratic tenets.

NANS, according to him, would hit the streets in protest if the process is halted.

While noting that NANS is not supporting anyone, he insisted that interference in a legitimate exercise of an electoral commission stands condemnable.

Kadiri said, “We align with the view of INEC that the process of recall of any legislator should not be stopped by courts but such cases should be given accelerated hearing even after the process.”

He decried how the TETFund probe linked to INEC was being used to discredit the recall process, saying, “This is a failed blackmail and we reject it completely and will resist any attempt to derail INEC in the legitimate discharge of its constitutional rights.”

Kadiri further disclosed that the body has commenced mobilization of students to foil plot by desperate politicians “to hijack the 2019 elections”.

Meanwhile, a Federal High Court sitting Abuja on Thursday fixed August 7, to hear the suit challenging the order that stopped INEC from going ahead with the recall process of Senator Dino Melaye.
