Dino Melaye, Senator representing Kogi West, on Sunday said alleged attempt by the Presidency to reconvene the Senate before the adjourned date was “tale by the moonlight.” The Presidency had earlier appealed to the National Assembly to reconvene as urgent matters pending before it may affect the running of Nigeria.

The appeal was made by the Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters, Sen. Ita Enang at a news conference in Lagos.

Reacting to the call, Melaye maintained that the move was a serious joke by its proponents.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Melaye said Senate’s rule 12 was very clear that only presiding officers can reconvene the Senate.

He said, “The talk to reconvene the Senate amounts to tale by the moonlight, a serious joke.

“We adjourned properly to a date and time. In their myopic thinking they forgot the rules.

“The rules and proceedings of the last sitting were also approved. By our rules only the Senate President or the Deputy Senate President can reconvene the Senate outside the adjourned date.

“It is laughable that some people in their myopic and skewed thinking should contemplate that the Senate should be reconvened by just anybody. It will not happen. It is an exercise in futility to impress Mr. President.”
